Hispanics in Gifted & Talented Programs (Identifying Hispanics for GT)

Education

I represent a non-profit arm of Duke University, the Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Our goal is to identify and offer supplemental educational opportunities and support to gifted youth in a 16 state region.

I am currently doing research on why Hispanic participation levels in my program are low, specifically in my 4/5th grade and 7th grade talent searches.

We have found that our Hispanic numbers are historically low and we would like to both understand it and change it if we are able. Perhaps my research will find that there is a bigger issue at hand, one that Duke TIP may not be able to affect, perhaps not. For example, is language a barrier for identification? Is language a barrier to reading the information we disseminate on our programs? Are schools just not sharing the information or participating in our Talent Searches? Is it a cultural issue, where parents may or may not understand the advantages and potential to one who is academically gifted? Are large numbers of Hispanic students simply not qualifying? If the latter, again, could it be because of language barriers (standardized tests being English intensive)?

So many questions! Either way, it is important to Duke TIP to attempt to address this often underserved population and affect positive change if we are able. We do not want our neglect to leave any gifted child behind!

If anyone would like to share their thoughts or personal experience on this concern, I would welcome the feedback.

Similarly, if one might refer me to other potential resources on the topic of Hispanic gifted education, please let me know!
