Minority status should not apply to Hispanic Americans

If you really think about it, everyone in this country is a minority; Catholics, Jews, Hispanics, Irish, Germans. Having stated that, why is it that the category of "Minority"(defined as nonwhite) is only reserved for Hispanics, and blacks? American blacks have very little in common with Latinos , yet we are placed in the same category; different needs, culture, concerns, and most of all, a whole different outlook on American society. It is obvious we are placed in that category because both groups are considered non white, or people of color. Latinos, as we all know, for the most part, can be White/Native, White and black if your family comes from the Caribean Islands. The point being, the "Minority" label does not accuretnly define us, is an insult to Hispanics and undermines our progress in America. One more thing, if you refer to the 2000 US census, a large part of the Hispanic population checked Hispanic under ethnic group, and white in the race category (from Los Angeles to Miami).

Minority status should not apply to Hispanics

I agree 100%. As a kid growing up in New York City, the term minority applied to all the various ethnic groups, Irish,Italian,Polish, Black, etc. It has now come to mean less in stature, rather than numbers.Prior to the late 60s, people of Hispanic heritage were classified by their respective race, be that White, and or Black. We have since been targeted by people with an agenda. An insidious political agenda that has brain washed our youth into thinking that the term Hispanic means race, rather than culture. An agenda that saddles our young with a no can do minority mentality that has eventually robbed them of their own respective racial identity! An agenda that has allowed the Black leadership in this country to purportedly speak for the interest of Hispanic-Americans. In doing so, they have given people the impression that the goals of Black Americans, and people of Hispanic heritage are one and the same. This is not so. People of Hispanic heritage do not always agree with Black Americans. People of Hispanic heritage should be allowed to speak for themselves. To pursue their own agendas, their own dreams, and do so unhamperd by the hopes and aspirations of the Black leadership. In closing, I must state that I have nothing against Black non Hispanic people. I wish them nothing but the best. Unfortunately, I cannot stand by and say nothing while others play politics with social and economic goals of Hispanic Americans.

minority?

minority should not be classified for any ethnic group the only thing it does is divide the nation into a modern day caste system. Separating the white superior class from the minority lower class. that is the way it is setup. Are you saying only hispanics should not be called a minority. A hispanic is someone who practice the culture and language of spain. Hispanic population est 41 million out almost 300 million US pop, so if you look at it that way hispanic is a minority just like black people who have been in america for over 400 years and still called a minority instesd of american. Hispanics an black americans have the same problems it is racism, racial profiling, discrimination.
