MINORITY???

The word minority has come to mean less in stature, rather than in numbers. It is an insulting generic term that robs people of their respective race, and or ethnic identity. It tends to lump Hispanics in with other groups, desregarding the fact that not all groups share the same out look, and or needs.

true

As you know, this is not a new term or rather a term made by any recent government administration such as "HIspanic" This term was coined during a time when segregation, discrimination and prejudice were all in fashion. I believe, however, that the purpose remains the same. To categorize anybody who is not white.

But who is white? Irish? Italian? Polish? Russian? All have white skinned but what exactly is white? Perhaps all those cultures bounded together by the commonality of skin color. Perhaps the term "Hispanic" was made for the same reason. I agree that there are Hispanics of darker or lighter skin color. Minority or Hispanic is not a permanent label. If the government or others want to see us as that, so be it. Big Deal. I know who I am and you all know who you are. Let's all be proud of that and let the face of ignorance and tastelessness show itself on those who wear it.

MINORITY

The term minority did at one time apply to a host of differing people, and did not take race into account. Hispanic on the other hand is not a made up term as some believe. It existed long before the government decided to use it. As a child in the 50s, I can remember my mother using it.Prior to using that term, the government in an effort to label us, attempted to use SSA ( Spanish Surnamed Americans) This may have worked except that they discovered that not all Spanish speaking people had Spanish last names. In any event, both of these terms have been corrupted to mean something other than what was intended. I will continue to take exception to the current use and meaning of these two words. I will continue to take exception to those who continue to define us in the most simplistic of terms, and in doing so,ignore our respective racial, ethnic and individual identities.
