Graphic Arts and Networking

Hello,

I am a new member of NSHP and simply wanted to initiate a dialogue on the topic of Graphic Design, Art, and Printing. I live in the metro Detroit area and would hope to make some contacts and develop some future relationships. I am a Graphic Designer doing work in both Spanish and English out of a home-based business. I hope to hear from some of you out there!

Interactive Media Design

Hello,
I just became a new member of NSHP and I would like to hear from other interactive designers or anyone that can give me some pointers on how to land a job in this field. I am currently attending The Art Institute of Houston and will be graduating soon. I am also in search for an internship so if you know someone who needs an interactive media designer in Houston, Texas...let me know.

I really appreciate any feedback, thanks.

¡¡Pero me entendiste!!

Hola Robert.

¡Saludos!

Are you still there?

I hope that you don’t murdered that creepy guy that told you have missed spelling, Came on the life is to short, to take too serious. By you read this you understanme. I like to start making contact wiht you about the Graphic design, Art and Printing topic that you proposed. I been working as Art Director for the last months in mexican edition of PLAYBOY magazine. And planed to move to San Francisco, CA, in middle days of March. So maybe we can develop some relationship, as graphic design professionals.

I hope to recive news from you very soon

¡Saludos!

You must be joking...

I worked in Mexico City for four years and I am bilingual. I have been involved in the graphic design and printing industry for over 25 years. Yes, I am that "creepy guy" who criticized an earlier posting to this site due to spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. You, my friend, are much, much worse. Just what language are you writing in? It is neither Spanish nor English. Que bruto. Ni puedes letrear la palabra "with" y hiciste más que veinte errores en tu mensaje.

My point was that, in printed communications on a professional level, words and images make up the design. The purpose of the design is to communicate a message to the viewer or reader. If you cannot spell or compose your thoughts, how are you going to be taken seriously? Here are a few tips (there are too many mistakes to even begin correcting in this brief message):

1.) You have even misspelled your explanation of misspelling (see "missed spelling" above).

2.) Learn the difference between the words "to" and "too" and how to use them in the same sentence.

3.) It is "Come on, life is too short." You wrote, "Came on the life is to short..."

4.) I believe you meant to write "understand me" not "understanme" (I am only on the second line and have not even touched on the sentence fragments, subject verb agreement errors, syntax problems, improper gerunds, etc.).

5.) the word is "planned" not "planed" which refers to a woodworking technique or an aeronautical movement.

6.) the proper spelling is "with" not "wiht"

7.) the proper spelling is "receive" not "recive"

I could go on and on, but this is too painful. Imagine if it really did not matter and you found tremendous success as a graphic designer. Perhaps one day you would be designing a collateral piece to promote Playboy Magazine. You are telling me that it would not matter if you spelled Playboy incorrectly, say, Plaebouy, for example. Or even Koka Coala! You see what I am talking about? Man, get it together and go back to school. Learn to spell and to compose sentences.

Caray!

No se de que hablas cuanto tu mismo tienes errores horribles: es deletrear en lugar de letrear, es e hiciste en lugar de y hiciste.

Pica, lica y califica!

Sage Advice

I hate to be overly critical, but your posting has 7 errors in the related realms of punctuation, spacing, and spelling. That is not to say that you do not have the ability to produce excellent work, however, attention to detail is paramount in the graphic design and pre-press industries. I think many folks prescribe to the notion that grammar and punctuation rules are somewhat flexible in the email community. I know many people do not bother capitalizing letters and writing complete sentences. This is understandable (and tolerable) to a degree. That being said, it would behoove you to spell the word "completed" correctly in order to attract serious clients to your business.

Graphic Arts and Networking

Hola,
What can I say about graphic arts and networking? Both are vital to your career. I learned this the hard way. I started my career with the notion that one only needed to do the best work possible to advance up that corporate ladder. It is true, your work defines who you are at the office, but, along the way, I noticed others focused more on relationships with the boss or with clients to much success. Their work, in my opinion left a lot to be desired, but their advancement never faltered. Keep on networking my friend, but always give your client kiss ass work. Graphic Arts and Networking

I agree that networking is a very important aspect of work. This is particularly true for freelanders and those looking for contract work. Doing quality work does speak for itself.

Graphic Arts and Networking

I began this topic a while back and most of the responses have been posted without much feedback. Do any of you live around the suburban Detroit area? Perhaps we could share some insights as to the types of work and software we use and the clients we serve. I personally have a small network of Macintosh computers at my home studio, running on OSX. I primarily use Quark XPress, the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat), Macromedia Freehand, and Corel Painter. I have an Intuos tablet and digital pen. Lately I have become fascinated with Painter. As a fine artist who has always used traditional media, I can hardly believe how natural this method of painting is. Of course, it is completely clean and the options are infinite.

What do some of you like to do? What kinds of clients do you have? How much of your work is in Spanish, how much in English? I hope to hear some more detailed responses.

Enthusiastic photographer/graphic designer searches position

Hi,
My resume seems to have been targeted by researchers saying that
my bilingual abilities should be posted in NSHP. I have done that
now. I would like to establish communication with professional photographers in the area of commercial photography and catalog photography. These areas in advertising interest me a lot, and would like to have some pals to exchange ideas and comments.

Maybe there are other souls out there with similar interests. Best.--Dan

Hola photographers

So Dan, did you find other photographers out there? I work in photography in Denver -- mostly on the business side, but photography nonetheless

David, Denver

Bilinguals targeted for NSHP postings

Hello Dan,

I was glad to get a response finally. I initiated the forum topic back on June 9. Then I posted a brief message in Spanish, hoping to persuade others to join in. Truthfully, some of my zeal for this web site diminished when I received no responses at all. I am encouraged now. Perhaps more folks will follow with comments. I am currently freelancing under my company's name, Comunicarte, Inc. The work is trickling in, but I would really like more. I do not know where you live, but, here in the Detroit area, things are very slow economically.

I have an old manual Nikon F1, which was, and still is, a fine 35mm SLR camera. I used to co-own a 4 x 5 with another friend of mine in Texas. When I moved away, I decided to sell my share back to him. I do not have a digital camera, just a digital video cam. Let me know where you are at. Perhaps, if I get a job that necessitates a decent amount of original photography, we can do some work together.

Take care, Bob

I recently ame across this site and Its good to see other proffesional latinos in the same field. I living in Georgia a few minutes south of Atlant in Peachtree City. Currently working as a photographer but I've been trying to move towrds Graphic design and Illustration a bit more. I'v been trying to start up on my own but its been difficult and I've also sent out plenty of resume (which is still on ongoing process) but I would be happier creating my own design buisness working from home. I'd love to hear how some of you started up your own design buisness from home and how its grown and the obstacles you had to overcome
