Would you book a Latino speaker for a general market event?

Latino speakers who serve as panelists, keynote speakers and trainers tend to be overlooked by the general market for corporate events, major conferences and events that are non-Hispanic (beyond Hispanic Heritage, Cinco de Mayo, Hispanic employee groups, etc.)
My perception is that corporations and organizations still don't recognize that most successful 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation Latinos can speak English and are immersed in US life. I keep repeating that experiencing the Latino culture shouldn't be perceived as a reason to narrow down our audiences.
Any opinions on this?

I agree that Latino Speakers tend to be overlooked by the general audience. However, according to my own experience, they themselves are much to blame. Most Latino speakers can't avoid the temptation of making reference during their speech to their Latin roots, or their humble origins as children of immigrants, or the prejudice and obstacles they had to overcome trying to make it as professional in their field. They do not realize how very little anybody cares to hear their stories, and that ultimately, this sets them apart from the very audience they are trying to reach. I personally find these stories very boring and uninspiring. Bring me a Latino speaker that has something to say, that can inspire only based on his knowledge of the subject at hand, without using his Latino background as a crutch and you have my attention.

Latino Speaker the Sad True

This society refuses to open their eyes. Our Latino community has talent, very successful professionals and large number of career-oriented part of the population. I feel that we are always underestimated. It is sad to see that the image that we have is not the one of an entrepreneur, but instead we have the image of hard working laborers on the positive side and on the negative side the image of criminals, welfare users and immigrant who enjoy exploding this country.

Yet who wants to give the pie when a slice can feed everyone. I believe that our image is changing and in fact I agree that we have 3rd and 4th even 1st generation Latinos who have educated themselves plenty to serve the purpose of speaker on a general conferences besides those that have to do with the Latino Community. I am not even first generation, but already a successful Engineering in the Business world.

So, we have a huge unappreciated talent. But hopefully it can change soon.

Latino Speaker

ACGBB,

I came across your June reply to a posting, and as a latino - hispanic speaker found it to be very direct and almost on the money.

I too dislike when a latino speaker drones on throughout his speech about his homeland, upbringing, etc.

In my 45-60 minutes speeches, maybe 2-3 minutes (this provides context) is dedicated to upbringing, the rest is about achieving personal and financial success.

So I agree with your point,...especially when the topic of their roots is "abused".

Take care. Victor Gonzalez
