AMERICAN FAMILY LIFE ASSURANCE COMPANY (AFLAC) is the leading provider of supplemental insurance sold at the worksite in the United States and the largest foreign insurer in Japan. Insuring more than 40 million people worldwide, AFLAC is the principal subsidiary of AFLAC Incorporated, an international holding company based in Georgia. At year-end 2000, the corporation’s total assets were more than $60 billion with annual revenues of more than $9.7 billion.

FOUNDED IN 1955 by brothers John, Paul and Bill Amos, AFLAC introduced one of the world’s first cancer expense insurance policies in 1958. The company initially operated in Georgia and Alabama, but by the mid-1960’s had expanded across much of the Southeast. The company continued its domestic expansion throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and now operates in all 50 states. Today AFLAC is a leader in supplemental insurance sold at the worksite in the United States. With 35,000 licensed agents, AFLAC sells its products through more than 350,000 U.S. payroll groups, making it “Number One in Payroll Marketing.”

DURING THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, Chief Executive Officer Daniel P Amos and Chairman Paul S Amos began strategically positioning AFLAC to compete in the changing world insurance market. AFLAC began broadening its product line in the 1980s, after selling virtually one product for more than 20 years. In addition to AFLAC’s flagship cancer expense protection, the company now offers a wide range of products that fill a variety of supplemental insurance needs. Today AFLAC offers coverage for accident and disability, hospital indemnity, long-term care, intensive care, and more. These new products, which were introduced just a few years ago, now account for 75% of new sales in the United States, with accident/disability coverage as the company’s best-selling U.S. policy. AFLAC began broadening its product line in Japan in 1992, and those newer products now account for 51% of new sales.
