About NYC Department of Parks & Recreation
As the steward of nearly 29,000 acres of parkland, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is a recognized leader and innovator of public spaces. We are a dynamic agency dedicated to beautifying, protecting, and revitalizing New York City's urban forest and precious green spaces. DPR is also committed to helping New Yorkers maintain active and healthy lifestyles in an urban environment. We maintain 14 miles of beaches, 800 ball fields, and 100 miles of bikeways and greenways linking parks and communities throughout the city. DPR also provides enriching athletic and educational programming to our children and young adults. By bringing culture, recreation, and a multitude of special events to the city's parklands, we enhance the urban experience for millions of New Yorkers.
DPR is entering an unprecedented period of growth and expansion as part of Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative. We have been charged with the challenges of planting one million new trees, ensuring that all New Yorkers live within a 10-minute walk of a park, and greening our neighborhoods to improve the quality of life for current and future generations. Additionally, we are responsible for designing and constructing major destination parks in every borough. www.nyc.gov/parks
