DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: #5588
This position is responsible for managing the Fast Wave Current Drive Operations Group at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility.
The candidate will be responsible for leading the daily operation, maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and upgrades to the Fast Wave System.
Candidate will direct the activities of Fast Wave Group staff, coordinate the needs of the FWCD system with other support systems, including HV systems, I&C, and Data Acquisition.
In addition, the candidate will play a key role in interacting with the rf physics staff in planning and executing experiments.
Candidate is responsible for achieving high system availability, maintaining efficient and safe operation of the system, developing and updating safety documentation, and training staff in proper procedures.
The manager is responsible for developing a yearly budget and schedules, reporting progress, and developing and executing long-term system upgrades that meet the needs of the DIII-D research program and advance the utilization of fast wave technology on DIII-D and future devices.
Long-term upgrades may include development of new antenna design, improved conditioning techniques, or power system upgrades.
The Fast Wave Program is a multi-institutional program (GA, ORNL, and PPPL) in a fast-moving research environment, so the successful candidate will need to interact effectively with the research staff and provide strong leadership and coordinate activities across institutional boundaries.
This position reports directly to the Director of DIII-D Operations.
Manager is also responsible for the coordination, training, development, and other personnel management issues for a mixed staff of engineers and technicians.
Candidate is expected interact with other fusion rf experiments worldwide and represent the DIII-D rf program through participation in conferences, publications, or review panels.
Participation in the DIII-D rf research program is encouraged, consistent with operational responsibilities remaining the highest priority for this position.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors (+6 years experience), Masters (+4 years experience) or PhD (+2 years experience) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related field.
Candidate must have an extensive knowledge and experience with high power (multi-MW) rf systems, especially in the frequency range of 50 MHz - 3 GHz.
Candidate must have a minimum of three years of experience in engineering project management,leadership of a multi-disciplinary team, and in operation of a large, complex system. Must be familiar with various support systems for rf operations - HV systems, data acquisition systems, instrumentation and control systems, and water systems.
Must have strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
Experience with computer data analysis is required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with rf design and analysis codes.
