Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: #5432

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and activation of opto-mechanical components and subsystems of lasers and optical systems for internal research and development, and government programs.

Specifically, opto-mechanical design, thermo-mechanical performance calculations, structural and modal performance calculations, short and long term stability analysis, management of designers, maintenance of laser documentation and qualification of vendors are among the duties they will perform.

The emphasis of this position is the design of mechanical hardware that supports optical systems and lasers.

The successful applicant will join a growing group activity pursuing new projects and thus must be a person who is a team player and who has initiative, willingness to take responsibility for development tasks, and a desire for growth and opportunity across a variety of projects.

Successful candidates will provide "hands-on" support to the project using Solidworks CAD Software for design, and analysis software (e.g. Cosmos, NASTRAN, ZMAX, etc.) to supplement hand calculation for heat transfer, structural, modal analyses.

In addition, the successful candidate is expected to:

Determine and develop effective approaches for resolving a wide range of difficult engineering problems.

Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and anticipated results.

Work is reviewed at milestones or at completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff and makes technical presentations as required.

May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues.

Provides direction to design or technical staff and may provide direction to less experienced professional staff.
Essential Functions Include:

Supports operation of engineering systems by evaluating and interpreting needs and problems and develops effective approaches to resolving those issues.

Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs systems in assigned area by utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles.

Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required.

Directs the activities of designers, technicians and may direct the activities of less experienced professional staff.

May represent the organization in providing solutions to technical issues associated with specific projects.

Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of a Bachelors degree and two or more years of experience.

May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education as follows: Masters degree in ME.

The candidate must demonstrate an understanding and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.

In addition, the candidate must have understanding of optical and precision mounting techniques, heat transfer, structural design, hardware design and fabrication techniques.

Candidates must have experience with Solidworks and Cosmos software.

The ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals.

The capability of representing the organization as a prime technical contact.

The ability to provide leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.

Customer focused, able to work on a selfinitiated basis or in a team environment; and, able to work extended hours and travel as required.

Candidates must be able to obtain a DoD secret level security clearance.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals.

Experience with space qualified precision mechanical, optical, and laser systems, high vacuum systems, and manufacturing design.

Hold an active secret level security clearance.
