Hispanics Heavily Engaged with Electronic Media

When we think of heavy technology users, we tend to imagine young white males. Perhaps instead we should be thinking of Hispanics. A new study from Terra Networks USA, the Miami-based digital content producer aimed at Hispanics, finds that the online Hispanic population is highly engaged with new technology, often moreso than with traditional media.

Economic Woes Hit Remittances

A survey just released by the Inter-American Development Bank found that the percentage of immigrants who report sending remittances to their country of origin has dropped to half in early 2008 compared with 73% two years ago, even though migrants continue to flock to the U.S.

In addition, the Central Bank of Mexico reported that remittances from the U.S. dropped 2.9% for the first three months of the year compared with the first quarter of 2007.

The findings by the Inter-American Development Bank marked the first decline in the number of immigrants sending money home since the institution began tracking them eight years ago.

Travel Industry Investing Heavily in Hispanic Market

A recent report shows airlines leading the travel industry in spending. Through the first three quarters of 2007, the top 10 airlines invested just over $19 million in Spanish-language advertising, with the majority ($12.5 million) going to Spanish-language network television. The top investor over the same period was Southwest Airlines at $11.8 million, as tracked by Nielson Monitor-Plus.

Motivational Speaker, Daniel Gutierrez Launches Internet Talk Radio Show

VoiceAmericaTM Network announced last week that international business consultant and motivational speaker, Daniel Gutierrez has joined the roster of their renowned talk show hosts. Gutierrez’s radio show, “Right Here, Right Now!” debuted on the VoiceAmerica Business Channel on March 20, 2008.

The 13-week pilot will include interviews with community leaders, who can give listeners tools for them to set goals on a personal, professional or business level. Gutierrez will cover topics such as career development, leadership, powerful public speaking, how to get more business and the art of networking.

According to figures compiled by the Center for Women's Business Research, the number of businesses owned by Hispanic women in the United States increased by 64 percent and the income generated by those companies grew by more than 62 percent to $44.4 billion.

The National Latina Business Women Association, is an organization that helps to raise the business knowledge level of its members or of women who are planning to start their own business, the NLBWA offers two business training programs: Emerging Latina and Latin Financial.

Nielsen Establishes National Hispanic/Latino Advisory Council

New York, NY, February 27 -- The Nielsen Company, today announced the formation of a national Hispanic/Latino Advisory Council (HLAC), a new independent advisory group established to help inform and enhance the Company's efforts to recruit, measure and accurately report on Hispanic television households in the U.S. The first meeting of the HLAC is scheduled for March 4, 2008 in New York.

Diversity Training Associated with Decreased Diversity in Management, Study Finds

A comprehensive review of 31 years of data from 830 mid-size to large U.S. workplaces found that the kind of diversity training exercises offered at most firms were followed by a 7.5 percent drop in the number of women in management. The number of black, female managers fell by 10 percent, and the number of black men in top positions fell by 12 percent. Similar effects were seen for Latinos and Asians.

Report Finds Little Change in Diversity on Corporate Boards

Recent study, "Women and Minorities on Fortune 100 Boards", showed little progress over two years in bringing diversity to the boardrooms of America’s leading corporations. According to the report, white men still held a disproportionate share of board director seats. It also noted that white men realized a net gain of 21 seats as compared with a net gain of three for all women and minority men.
