Message from the President and CEO of the National Society for Hispanic Professionals
Dear NSHP Friends and Colleagues:
It is my pleasure to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as the newly appointed President and CEO of the National Society for Hispanic Professionals (NSHP). I am extremely excited to take on this new challenge in this new year and I am looking forward to making NSHP the premier connection point for Hispanic professionals in the United States and the Americas.


US Hispanic News

Latino attitudes on the war in Iraq, the economy and the 2004 election. Latino support for the war in Iraq and for President George W. Bush has surged since the capture of Saddam Hussein, but Latinos remain concerned about the condition of the U.S. economy and the long-term consequences of the war.

Ag industry says Bush immigration plan flawed. President Bush may have earned praise for proposing immigration reforms, but both farmers and farm workers say his plan lacks one key element: a path to permanent residency for the immigrants needed to harvest the nation's fruit and vegetables.

Penal disenfranchisement law called biased.
A suit filed Jan. 6 in Union County, N.J., alleges that a state law denying voting rights to parolees and probationers discriminates against blacks and Hispanics due to their overrepresentation in the criminal justice system.

Online Hispanic Publishers Form IAB Hispanic Committee. Online Hispanic publishers have joined forces with the Interactive Advertising Bureau to create the IAB Hispanic Committee.

Hispanic publishers combine. The publishers of the Los Angeles Hispanic daily newspaper La Opinion and CPK Media, which publishes El Diario-La Prensa in New York, are combining to form a national Spanish-language publishing firm.

The Bush proposal.
President Bush announced a sweeping new immigration reform proposal this week that could become a hot-button issue in the November election.

  • President Bush appoints Adam Chavarria to Hispanic initiative. Adam Chavarria has become executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans at the United States Department of Education.
  • NCLR selects Janet Murguia as New Executive Director. The National Council of La Raza's (NCLR) Board of Directors and its Chair José Villarreal Tuesday announced the selection of Janet Murguia as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO) after a nationwide search.
