Grants to Improve English Language Skills in the Workplace
The U.S. Department of Labor has announced it will give five grants totaling more than $4.9 million to improve English language skills in the workplace. The grants will train approximately 4,400 individuals in California, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York and Texas.

Puerto Ricans have a higher death rate linked to high blood pressure than blacks, whites or other Hispanic Americans do, according to federal health researchers who analyzed specific U.S. Hispanic populations.

EPA's Hispanic Web Site adds Hispanic environmental health page to site
The EPA has announced a new Hispanic environmental health page on its Spanish Web site that discusses health and environmental issues associated with asthma, mold, and indoor carbon monoxide. The portal is part of the agency's continuing expansion of outreach to the Hispanic community.

Money for higher education is available for Hispanic students. Be sure to check NSHP's scholarship section for the newest listings of available programs. Recent scholarships posted include programs from Provident Bank, ALPFA and Sallie Mae.

  • Ruben Garcia has been named the new district director of the US Small Business Administration (SBA) district office in San Diego. Mr. Garcia has held management positions in companies like ARCO, Texaco, Clark Equipment and Yale among others and in 1999 he founded NAHREP (National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals) a non-profit association committed to increase Hispanic homeownership by empowering real estate professionals that serve Hispanic consumers.


  • Daniel Flores has been named President and CEO of the Greater Washington Ibero-American Chamber of Commerce, having previously served as senior advisor to the US Chamber of Commerce.


  • David Hernandez, Chairman and CEO of the national retail electricity provider Liberty Power, received both the "Rising Star Award" and the "Entrepreneur of the Year" award from Hispanic Business Magazine. The award was given at the 15th annual Entrepreneur of the Year award ceremony in Los Angeles, which celebrates the success of Latino entrepreneurs nationwide.
