Missing in Action: L.A. County Latino Physicians
A UCLA study released this month found Los Angeles County to have "an acute shortage of culturally competent doctors to treat the area's Latino community." The report, which is a follow-up to the "2003 Latino Scorecard," examines how Latinos in Los Angeles are faring in five key areas: health, education, economic development, housing and public safety.

LATINA Style 50 Best Practices in Diversity Conference & Awards Ceremony

LATINA Style Magazine's third annual Best Practices in Diversity Conference & Awards Ceremony will honor the 50 Best Companies of 2005. The event will host a welcoming breakfast and discussion workshop throughout the morning, and an awards luncheon to recognize companies being honored.   • Otto Padron has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Programming and Promotions for the Univision Network, where he will oversee all aspects of programming, scheduling, acquisition, promotions and research. Univision Communications Inc. (NYSE:UVN) is the leading Spanish-language media company in the United States.


  • Gabriel Escobar, until recently the city editor of The Washington Post, will join the Pew Hispanic Center as associate director for publications. Escobar will take on a wide range of responsibilities as an analyst, editor and manager when he begins work at the Center later this month.


  • Jose B. Fernandez will become the first Hispanic dean at the University of Central Florida. UCF appointed Fernandez as dean of the new College of Arts and Humanities, effective fall 2006. He has served as associate dean of the former College of Arts and Sciences since 1999.
