The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) is a public, not-for-profit national organization founded by Rachel Robinson in 1973 as a vehicle to perpetuate the memory of Jackie Robinson and his achievements. Serving as an advocate for young people with the greatest need, the Foundation assists increasing numbers of minority youths through the granting of four-year scholarships for higher education. The Jackie Robinson Foundation provides much more than financial support. While each Jackie Robinson Scholar receives up to $7,200 a year in financial support, they also become an active member in the Foundation’s unique Education and Leadership Development Program, which is an extensive mentoring program that includes attendance at workshops, assignment of a peer and a professional mentor and placement into summer internships and permanent employment. HOW SCHOLARS ARE CHOSEN: Jackie Robinson Scholars are chosen via a highly selective process by a national selection committee based in New York City and regional committees in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Stamford, Connecticut. The committee, consisting of academic, corporate and civic leaders rate applicants based on the following criteria: academic achievement, leadership potential, a commitment to community service and financial need. HOW TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP: Through its Education and Leadership Development Program, The Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships of up to $7,200 annually to minority high school students showing leadership potential and demonstrating financial need to attend an accredited 4-year college or university of their choice. You must be a U.S. citizen in order to qualify for the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Award. The application package must include a letter of recommendation and an official transcript (with raised seal). In addition, all applicants are required to take either the Standardized Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) and submit their scores.

The Graduate School Fellowships: Graduate School fellowships are named in honor of Dr. Linton E. Grinter, who was Dean of the Graduate School, 1952-1969. Each year $785,000 is awarded to students in the form of Grinter Fellowships. The intent of the Grinter Fellowship is to facilitate the recruitment of truly exceptional graduate students to the University of Florida. Currently enrolled UF graduate students are not eligible, except in the particular case in which they will be entering a PhD (or other terminal degree) program for the first time. Ordinarily, the Grinter is limited to PhD students. Exceptions are made for those areas in the University that have a terminal degree different from the PhD (e.g. Master of Fine Arts, Architecture, Building Construction, and Landscape Architecture). Grinter Fellowships are not assistantships. No duties may be required of the student (except those duties associated with an assistantship held concurrently). Grinter Fellowship stipends are normally in the $2,000-$4,000 range. Continuation of the Grinter beyond the first year (up to a total of three years) is contingent upon satisfactory student progress. An annual report is made to the Graduate School in this regard for each student. Note: Students enrolled in the Colleges of Engineering and Law are not eligible for Grinter Fellowships.

Federal Work Study Program (FWS) The FWS program is a federal program which enables student to earn part of their financial aid award through part-time employment either on or off campus. To be eligible, a student must meet the eligibility requirements for federal financial aid and must maintain good academic standing while employed under the program. Hourly wages may vary with the type of work. Employment under this program is also available to students qualifying for financial aid during the summer. Presidential Classroom Scholars Program is an opportunity for students with special interests in government and public policy to go behind the scenes of the nation's capital. This program investigates how social, economic and foreign policy is defined and how the three branches of government interact. This focused view of the federal government gives PC Scholars direct access to national leaders and often inspires students to seek careers in public service. This program is important to all students who want to refine their critical thinking and leadership capabilities. Students research, draft and present a report that summarizes the pros, cons and possible issues to a current issue. The current issues report allows them to interact with Washington insiders, engage in team-building activities and enhance negotiation skills. Each year Newsweek Education Program chooses one student report to be published and distributed nationally. Seminar topics can include Power in Washington, Role of the Federal Agency, Role of the Judiciary, National Defense Policy, U.S. Foreign Policy, Issues Facing America: View from Congress, Role of the Media in a Democracy, Life of a Lobbyist and Leadership and You. The Financial Aid Office administers three types of scholarships: Institutional, Departmental and Community Scholarships. Typically, scholarships are disbursed in two disbursements, normally at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters unless specifically noted by the scholarship donor. However, no disbursements will be made until the Financial Aid Office has received funds from the scholarship donor. Scholarships are used as a resource in a student's financial aid package, and may reduce need-based financial aid awards. The Financial Aid Office does not endorse scholarship search services that require a usage fee. - Institutional Scholarships Apply for different scholarships with one application. Applications are available ONLY on the Web Site beginning mid-January. Applications are due by March 15 and award notifications are made in June. - Departmental Scholarships Check with your major department for more information. Each department has different scholarship application processes and deadlines. - Community Scholarships Community scholarship announcements are posted outside the Financial Aid Office as they are received. Community scholarship announcements are posted in the Library. Be sure to check weekly for new announcements. The University of New Mexico Scholarship Office administers the majority of Scholarships at the University. Scholarships are traditionally known as merit based, and a competitive process usually accompanies the activities surrounding selection and monitoring of the various programs.
